Burdick and Bello Win National 50 km Titles

Five athletes from Niagara competed in the USATF 50 km Championships held March 6 in Lloyd Harbor, NY with two claiming national titles and the other three all picking up top six overal finishes.  The event was held in Caumsett State Historic Park on Long Island.  
 
Winning national titles were Jared Burdick, 29 of Fayetteville, NY and Joseph Bello, 71, of Rochester.  Burdick was the open men’s winner in a time of 2:57:50 (5:44/mile pace).  Burdick took the lead with just over 2 miles to go from a fading Zachary Ornelas and ran to a 1:40 win over Fred Joslyn who passed Ornelas in the last mile.  Finishing sixth and seventh in the open men’s division were Chris Raulli, 27, of Syracuse and Cole Crosby, 27, of Endicott.  Raulli ran 3:08:39 while Crosby finished in 3:11:45.
 
In the open women’s race Laura Kline, 38, of New Paltz, NY finished second running a solid time of 3:40:18 (just under 7:00/mile).  The women’s race was won by Californian Caroline Boller who ran 3:22:51 to set a new U.S. masters (40-44) record.
 
Bello ran to victory in the  men’s 70-74 masters division in a time of 6:30:41.
