Herbert, Leone win titles at Niagara 10 km Championships

The 2018 USATF Niagara 10 km Championships were held on Sunday (20-May) as part of the Rochester Lilac Festival 10 km.  Sixty-two (62) athletes competed in the championships.
 
The open champions were Matthew Herbert, 24, (Springwater) and Laurel Leone, 33, (Minoa). Herbert, who finished 4th here last year, ran 31:01 to defeat Chad Maloy, 25, (Buffalo) who stopped the clock at 31:19.  2017 Niagara Runner of the Year, Omar Boulama, 24, (Rochester) finished third in 31:38. Boulama won the 10 km title in 2016 and was third last year. 
 
After a one year hiatus, Leone returned to the 10 km championships to defeat 2017 champion and 2017 Niagara Runner of the Year, Kathryn Potter, 29, (Honeoye Falls).  Leone, the 2016 champion, ran 35:51 with Potter 26 seconds back.  Melissa Johnson-White, 37, (Fairport) ran 36:39 for third place.
 
The top masters performances were turned in by Mark Andrews, 47, of Rochester and Beth Deciantis, 56, of Rochester.  Anderws won the men’s 45-49 division running 33:06 which scored 88.53% on the age-grading tables.  Deciantis ran 44:13 scoring 83.46% for top women's score.  Derrick Jones, 46, of Henrietta ran 34:16 for an age graded score of 84.82%.  He finished second in the 45-49 division; following Andrews in that division.  Others with scores above 80% were: Mike Nier, 53, (81.89%), Paul Noe, 58, (81.57%), Charlie Andrews, 60, (81.22%), Jim May, 72, (80.66%), and  Mark Rybinski, 63 (80.18%). 
 
The Genesee Valley Harriers (GVH) won both the open men's and women's team titles.  The GVH men's team of Chad Maloy, Omar Boulama, Tyler Eustance, Brennan Root, and Jason McElwain combined for a team time of 2:44:00 to defeat the Bergen Elite team by 5:09.  Roadkill Racing finished third with a team time of 3:06:02. In the women's team competition the GVH squad of Kathryn Potter, Georgia Tuttle, and Rachel Pinney combined for a time of 1:55:22 to defeat the GHH B team. Genesee Valley Harriers also won team titles in the masters 40+ mens, 40+ women's, men's 60+, and 70+ men's divisions.       
 
The event served as the first race in the 2018 USATF Niagara Runner of The Year Series.  The next event on the schedule is the USATF Niagara Half Marathon Trail Championships on June 9 in Naples, NY.
