Hernandez, Reith finish 1-2 at national masters championships in Iowa

(16-Jul) On Sunday the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships concluded in Ames, Iowa. Nearly 900 athletes from 48 states competed in the championships.  Athletes ranging in age from 30 to 98 competed against peers similar in age in 5-year age divisions.
 
Niagara members won a total of three championship medals (for their top three finishes).  The highlight of the meet for the locals was the 1-2 finish by Genesee Valley Harriers teammates Christopher Hernandez, 43, (Charleston, SC) and Tim Rieth, 43, (Rochester) in the men's 40-44 1500m.  Hernandez won running 4:24.78 with Rieth less than two seconds back in 4:26.53.
 
Both also competed in the 800m where Rieth picked up his second silver medal as he ran 2:07.07 to trail only the 2:05,68 turned in by Chuck Schneekloth Jr of New Jersey.  Hernandez was fourth running 2:08.92,
 
Dale Flanders, 54, (Allegany, NY / Genesee Valley Harriers) finished fourth in the 1500m (4:53.27) and fifth in the 5000m (4:53.27) in the men's 50-54 division.
 
Competing in the women's 55-59 division Gail Geiger, 56, (Caledonia, NY / Genesee Valley Harriers) finished fifth in the 400m and 800m events. Her times were 1:29.27 and 3:23.49, respectively.
 
Robert Bland, 67, (Lansing, NY / Finger Lakes Runners Club) finished sixth in the men's 65-69 400m running 1:07.32.
