Surdej fifth; Smith sixth at USATF U20 Championships in Oregon

The USATF U20 Outdoor Championships were held in Eugene, Oregon from June 23-26.  The championships were held in connection with the USATF Open Outdoor Championships in the newly renovated Hayward Stadium on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Athletes who do not turn 20 before the end of the year are eligible to compete in the championships with the top two in each event earning qualifying spots to Team USA for the World Athletics U20 Championships (August 1-6, 2022; Cali, Colombia).

Two members of USATF Niagara are compete in the championships; both in the hammer throw.  In the women's competition Natalia Surdej (Univ. of Connecticut) of Lancaster, NY finished fifth with a throw of 53.86m (176-8). 

In the men's competition, Sean Smith (University of Iowa) of Webster, NY  finished sixth with a mark of 64.32m (211-0).
