GVH M40+, M50+ and Syracuse M70+ win team titles

Niagara Results Scoreboard

On Sunday (16-April) 37 USATF Niagara members and eight local teams competed in the USATF Masters Half Marathon Championships in Syracuse, NY.

The championship, hosted by the Syracuse Half Marathon for the second straight year, was the sixth race in the 2023 USATF National Masters Grand Prix. A total of 100 athletes competed in the championships.

The storylines of the day were the three individual and two team titles won by the Nigara athletes. A total of 11 athletes from USATF Niagara and all eight teams earned trips to the awards podium for their top-three age division finishes.

Winning national titles were Chelsea Benson, Scott Humphrey, and James Foster. Team titles were won by the Genesee Valley Harriers M40+ and M50+ squads and the Syracuse Track Club M70+ team.

Chelsea Benson

Chelsea Benson (40, Ithaca, NY), competing in her first masters national championship after turning 40 in August, won the 40-44 division running 1:20:15. She was the first woman to finish as she defeated Sarah Bishop of Virginia by over three minutes. Her age graded score of 84.52% was the 10th best among the 46 women competitors and the best of all of the Niagara athletes that competed. Those with the top age-graded scores are considered the athletes with the best performance across all runners of all ages in the championships. Scores of 90% and over are considered world class performances while scores between 80-89% are considered national class performances.

IN THEIR WORDS - Chelsea Benson

Winning my first national title as a master was especially sweet since the event was "practically" in our backyard! It was fun seeing and cheering for the local teams including GVH, Syracuse Track Club, and Bergen Elite to name a few! The event coordinators and USATF did a wonderful job hosting a fabulous race. As far as my race, I would have loved to contend for the overall win (in the Syracuse Half Marathon), but it was not in the cards on that day. The heat and hills caused me to slow over the last 5k and I was grateful to see the finish (and the finishing tape!). I'm looking forward to continuing to compete as a master's athlete and hope to be one of the handful that qualify for the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials.

Scott Humphrey

In the men's 55-59 division, Scott Humphrey (56, Marcy, NY, Syracuse TC) ran 1:22:08 to claim the gold medal in the division. He defeated Mike Nier (56, Rochester, NY, Genesee Valley Harriers) who ran 1:26:18 to pickup the silver medal. Humphrey age graded score was 83.55% while Neir's score was 81.55%; the two best Niagara men's performances on the day. Michael Mertens (59, Farmington, NY, Genesee Valley Harriers) finished fourth in the division running 1:29:58.

IN THEIR WORDS - SCOTT HUMPHREY

The Syracuse Half Marathon was my first race of 2023. It was great to have a USATF Masters championship take place so close to home. I’m always excited to compete but this one also made me more cautious for a few reasons. One, it’s a distance I have not competed at often and is the longest distance I have competed at in the last 25 years. Two, temperatures were unseasonably high for Syracuse in April. And three, while my weekly mileage has been higher than ever, a calf strain since late January resulted in a more limited number of higher intensity workouts more than I’d have preferred. But, as the gun goes off we mostly put those concerns behind and just compete. The course coupled with the temperatures was certainly challenging but through 5K I felt good and was on pace. Mile splits remained consistent through 15K as we tackled the rolling hills and the pace felt manageable. The plan was to just stay controlled until mile ten then hopefully step up the pace on the final few flat miles. Unfortunately, I began to feel the effects of the heat around that point and that combined with a loss of some mental focus resulted in me easing up slightly and I probably lost 45 seconds over those few miles. However, for the first race of 2023 I'm pleased and anxious for the next competition. I had never won a USATF National title in any age group before this race so I will proudly accept that title for the year and hope I can defend it next year. The race was well organized and the quality of the competition was great overall and in each of the master's age groups on both the men's and women's side. I was able to talk with several athletes after the event and appreciate the positive interactions and the insight people provided on what works for them. I was probably within the last 1% of runners to leave the Oncenter that day and anyone who knows me knows that's par for the course!

James Foster

The third individual title won by a Niagara athlete was by James Foster (71, Chittenango, NY, Syracuse TC) in the men's 70-74 division. Foster ran 1:42:05 which scored 78.09% on the age grading tables. He defeated Eugene Myers of Maryland by 55 seconds. This was Foster's second USATF national title. His first was in 2017 when he won the men's 65-69 division at the USATF Club Cross Country Championships in Kentucky.

Joining Nier as silver medalists were Marcus Gage, 51, Palmyra, NY, Genesee Valley Harriers) in the men's 50-54 divions and Keith Yeates (75, Fairport, NY, Genesee Valley Harriers) in the men's 75-79 division.

Picking up third place finishes were: Caroline Bucci (50, Rochester, NY, Genesee Valley Harriers) in the women's 50-54 division, Jacalyn Lembo (57, Penfield, NY, Genesee Valley Harriers) in the women's 55-59 division, Randall Howard (48, Rochester, NY, Genesee Valley Harriers) in the men's 45-59 division, Andrew Bucci (50, Rochester, NY, Genesee Valley Harriers) in the men's 50-54 division, and Timothy Riccardi (65, Marietta, NY, Genesee Valley Harriers) in the men's 65-69 division).

Lembo's time of 1:37:26 scored 83.15% on the age graded tables; the second best among the Niagara women just behind Benson's 84.52%.

In the team competition the Genesee Valley Harriers won both the M40+ and M50+ divisions. In the M40+ division the winning squad consisted of Evan Dumrese, Randall Howard, and Michael Mertens. Their cumulative team time of 4:14:28 defeated the Shore Athletic Club by 38:22. The scoring members of the M50+ team were Marcus Gage, Mike Nier, and Andrew Bucci. Their cumulative team time of 4:17:28  defeated local rival Syracuse Track Club by 40:22.

In the M70+ team scoring the Syracuse Track Club won with a cumulative team time of 6:06:32; defeating the Atlanta Track Club by 10:52. Their team scorers were James Foster, Theodore Larison, and James Miner. The Genesee Valley Harriers were third with a team score of 6:44:09.

The Syracuse TC M60+ and Genesee Valley Harriers W50+ squads each earned second place finishes.
