USATF Niagara athletes delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 USATF Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held July 16-19 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The championships, which attracted 1,719 athletes from all 50 states, were significantly impacted by poor air quality caused by the Canadian wildfires. Originally scheduled as a four-day meet, the competition was effectively condensed into two days as organizers moved some events to the adjacent indoor track, revised the competition schedule, and canceled others due to unsafe air quality. Despite the challenging conditions, 25 member of USATF Niagara combined to compete in 52 events at the national championships.
The meet was highlighted by the outstanding performance of District Elite AC, whose women's team finished 13th overall among 70 scoring clubs. The squad was led by Caroline Cobb, who captured the W40-44 2000m Steeplechase title, helped District Elite AC win national championships in the W40-44 4x100m Relay and 4x400m Relay, and added silver medals in the 400m, 5000m, and 5000m Race Walk. Debra Cane added another national title in the W50-54 2000m Steeplechase, while Alex Dietrich contributed a bronze medal in the W45-49 2000m Steeplechase and several additional scoring performances that helped District Elite AC secure one of the nation's top women's club finishes.
Checkers AC also enjoyed an outstanding championship, finishing 19th overall in the men's team standings among 88 scoring clubs. The effort was led by the national titles won by Dan Giza (M35-39 1500m), Tom Wall (M45-49 3000m Steeplechase), and Bob Duggan (M35-39 Pole Vault). Their performances helped power Checkers AC to one of the nation's top men's club finishes.
Additional national champions included Gary Crawford (Syracuse Chargers TC), who won the M85-89 Hammer Throw and added a silver medal in the Discus Throw, and Windy Sebastian-Dean (Syracuse Chargers TC), who captured the W45-49 Hammer Throw title.
Niagara athletes also collected numerous additional podium finishes. Barbara Sauer (Checkers AC) earned silver in the W75-79 800m and bronze in the 1500m. Mike Nier (Genesee Valley Harriers) captured bronze medals in both the M60-64 800m and 1500m, while Michael Greene (District Elite AC), Arthur Scissum (Genesee Valley Harriers), and Charles Infurna (Unattached) each added bronze medals in their respective events.
Additional top-eight performances were recorded by Lace Luedke (W50-54, 200m 4th, 400m 6th, Shot Put 6th, 100m 7th), Brian Cummins (M70-74, 5000m 4th), Bryan Woodruff (M40-44, Pole Vault 4th), Joseph Mora III (M60-64, 800m 5th, 1500m 6th), Susan John (W65-69, 800m 6th, 1500m 7th), Gail Geiger (W60-64, 800m 7th, 400m 8th), Laura Ochoa (W45-49, 800m 7th), Christopher Rauber (M55-59, 1500m 5th), Leander Boreland Jr. (M55-59, Shot Put 5th, Discus Throw 5th), and Cassandra Crane (W55-59, 5000m 6th).
Despite the challenging conditions and a significantly altered competition schedule, USATF Niagara athletes returned home with nine national titles, numerous podium finishes, and two nationally recognized club performances that highlighted the strength of the association's masters track & field program.
