After more than four decades of dedicated service to the sport, Tom Priester is retiring from track & field officiating, leaving behind a legacy defined by professionalism, integrity, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to athletes.
For generations of competitors, coaches, and fellow officials, Tom has been a familiar and respected presence at meets ranging from local high school competitions to NCAA championships, USATF national championships, U.S. Olympic Trials, and international events. Since becoming a USATF official in 1985, he has earned a reputation as one of the nation's most accomplished and dependable running event officials, always placing fairness and the athlete experience at the center of every competition.
Before becoming one of the country's premier officials, Tom devoted 45 years to education and coaching at Southwestern Central School, where he built successful cross country and track & field programs while positively influencing countless young athletes. His passion for the sport never faded, and when he transitioned from coaching to officiating in 1975, he embarked on a second career that would impact track & field across New York and the United States.
Throughout his officiating career, Tom worked multiple Olympic Trials, NCAA championships, USATF championships, Junior Olympic Championships, and international competitions, while continuing to mentor new officials and support meets throughout the Niagara association. His remarkable contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Charles Ruter Award, one of USATF's highest recognitions for running event officials, along with multiple USATF Officials Committee Service Awards and numerous state and regional officiating honors.
While his résumé is extraordinary, those who have worked alongside Tom know his greatest contribution cannot be measured by awards or assignments. He has been a trusted mentor, a steady leader, and a gracious ambassador for the sport, helping develop generations of officials while ensuring that every athlete competed under the fairest possible conditions.
As Tom steps away from officiating, the track & field community celebrates a career that has touched thousands of athletes and countless fellow officials. His influence will continue to be felt long after his final meet.
