Burdick and Kline Grab Top Three Finishes at National Trail Championships

The 2016 USATF 50 Mile Trail Championships were held on Saturday, June 4 in Ithaca, N.Y.  The championships were part of the Cayuga Trails 50 and held in the scenic Robert H. Treman State Park.  A total of athletes 16 athletes from the Niagara association competed in the championships
In the open division Jared Burdick, 29, of Fayetteville and Laura Kline, 38, of New Palz led the Niagara athletes as they each finished in the top three in the open division.  In the masters divisions Olga Huber of Macedon, Todd Baum ofFayetteville, and Charles Leonard of Freeville each picked up national titles.
Open Division
Burdick, who won the USATF 50 km Championships in March, finished second overall in the men’s race covering the undulating course that included river crossings and stair climbs in 6:55:00.  Burdick only trailed winner Tyler Sigl of Wisconsin who ran 6:43:00.  "This is my second time running this event and it is really well run and very organized, offered Burdick. “My plan was to go out moderately conservative and see how I felt and where I was during the race at around 37 miles and if I could, make a strong push to the finish. I went out pretty much like I wanted to but I started mildly cramping fairly early around 20 miles. I backed off a little and kept it at a decent pace through 37 and ended up kind of holding it steady from there.  I'm very happy with how I ran and I improved on last years time by 5minutes in probably worse conditions."
Meanwhile, Kline finished third in the women’s race completing the course in 8:28:00.  She trailed race winner Corrine Malcolm of Washington and Sabrina Little of Texas who ran 8:18:00 and 8:23:00; respectively.  Kline finished over 30 minutes ahead of the fourth place finisher.  "Cayuga Trails 50 is one of the coolest and challenging courses I've raced and it is such a top-notch event all-around,” stated Kline. “My plan was to run the first loop relaxed and not worry about placement. The 2nd loop was definitely rough with the rising temps but overall I took 23 minutes off last year's time and that was my main goal coming into this race."
Joining Burdick and Kline as visitors to the awards podium for their top-10 finishes in the open division were Olga Huber and Jade Mills (Syracuse) who finished 9th and 10th; respectively in the women’s race, and C Fred Joslyn (Mount Holly Springs, PA) who finished 10th place in the men’s race.
Masters Division
USATF Niagara athletes claimed three national masters titles as Olga Huber, Todd Baum, and Charles Leonard each won gold in their divisions.  Huber, who finished second in the open division and won the 45-49 masters title at the 100 km Trail Championships in Texas earlier in the year, won the women’s 45-49 division here.  She covered the course in 10:31:00.  Baum won the men’s 55-59 division in 10:47:00 and Leondard was the men’s 60-64 champion running 12:21:00.
The next two championships on the USATF Mountain Ultra Trail schedule are the USATF Mountain Running Championships (July 3 in Lincoln, NH) and the USATF 30 km Trail Championships (July 30 in Colorado Springs, Colo.).  For a complete calendar of national USATF championships click here.
