Hyner wins; Mora top Niagara performer at masters 10 km Championships in Massachusetts

On Sunday (24-April) 22 athletes and 4 teams from USATF Niagara competed in the USATF Masters 10 km Championships in Dedham, Mass.  The championships were hosted by the James Joyce Ramble for the eighth time.  It was the the sixth race in the 2022 USATF National Masters Grand Prix.  

A total of 295 athletes from 23 states competed in the championships.

Edna Hyer, 87, of Orchard Park and Jim May, 75, of Williamson each earned visits to the awards podium for their top three age division finishes.  Hyer won the women's 85-89 division running 1:25:23 and May finished third in the men's 75-79 division running 48:45. 

Two Genesee Valley Harriers teams (M60+ and M70+) finished second to also be celebrated during the awards ceremony following the race.  The men's 60+ team cumulative team time was 1:57:35; just 27 seconds behind the Shore AC of New Jersey. The team scorers were Joseph Mora III (4th M60; 36:59, John Van Kerkhove (9th M60; 40:06), and Timothy Riccardi (11th M60; 40:30). The men's 70+ team turned in a cumulative team time of 2:36:13.  The team's scoring members were Jim May (3rd M75; 48:45), Liam Finnigan (6th M75; 50:05), and David Blake (11th M70; 57:23).  The Atlanta TC won with a total time of 2:19:26.  

The Genesee Valley Harriers W60+ team (LeAnn Finnigan, Sharon Moore, and Wende Rieck) finished fourth and the M50+ team (Mark Andrews, Mike Nier, and Theodor Schnaufer) finished fifth.

The top age-graded performance on the day for the Niagara athletes was turned in by Joseph Mora III, 60, of Fayetteville.  Mora's time of 36:59 scored 87.74% on the age-grading tables. Age-graded scores of 80-89% are considered national-class performances with scores of 90% and over classified as world-class performances. His score was the 13th best among the 173 men in the championships.  Mora finished fourth in the hotly contested men's 60-64 division and was just five seconds behind the bronze medal.  Mark Andrews, 51, of Rochester had the second best score as his 35:48 scored 83.71%.  Barbara Sauer's 80.95% age-grading score was the best among the Niagara women.

The next USATF masters championships will be the 1 Mile Road Championship on May 21 in Rochester, NY.
