Checkers AC Capture Two Team Titles at USATF Masters 1 Mile Championships in Iowa

At the
USATF Masters 1 Mile Championships
held April 21 in Des Moines, Iowa, athletes from USATF Niagara delivered standout performances, highlighted by two national team titles for the Checkers AC and a pair of individual champions.
Leading the way on the women’s side,
Julie King
captured the W55–59 national title, clocking 6:37 to secure gold. King’s victory set the tone for a dominant day by Checkers AC, as teammate
Brenda White
followed with a runner-up finish in 7:08.
In the W75–79 division,
Barbara Sauer
added another national title for Niagara, winning convincingly in 9:59 to claim the crown.
Behind the strength of King, White, and Sauer, the Checkers AC secured the W50+ team title with a combined time of 23:37.
On the men’s side, Checkers AC continued its success, capturing the M50+ team title in 15:57. The scoring trio featured Joe
Silliman
(5:13, 6th 50-54),
John McMahon
(5:21, 2nd 55-59), and
James Ciliberto
(5:27, 3rd 55-59), each contributing strong performances to secure the national title.
Additional Niagara results included solid efforts from Genesee Valley Harriers athletes, highlighted by
Mike Nier
(5:22, 3rd) and
Joseph Mora
(5:27, 5th) in the M60–64 division, as well as
Bill Beyerbach
(6:34) 11th in the M70–74 division. The trio combined to place third in the M60+ team standings. On the women’s side,
Cassandra Crane
(7:27, 5th 55-59) and
Gail Geiger
(8:15, 6th 60-64) also represented Niagara with strong performances in their respective age divisions.
