Coppi Wins First USATF Title at Mountain Running Championships in New Hampshire

Results

Five Niagara tested themselves against the nation's best mountain runners on Saturday (6-June) at the USATF Mountain Running Championships, held at Mount Sunapee Ski Resort in Newbury, New Hampshire. The championship race was contested as part of the Sunapee Scramble, a challenging 9.3-mile up-and-down mountain course featuring more than 3,300 feet of elevation gain. A total of 133 athletes from around the country competed in the championships

Leading the way for Niagara was Mason Coppi of Syracuse, who captured the men's national title in a winning time of 1:09:48. The victory marked the first USATF national championship title of Coppi's career and earned him a spot on Team USA for the WMRA World Cup Final, which will be held October 10-11 in Quebec, Canada. Coppi defeated Christian Allen of Utah by 98 seconds.

Niagara athletes placed four more runners inside the top 40 of the national championship field. Benjamin Otis (5th, 1:16:16) of Syracuse, Adam Pacheck (12th, 1:22:08) of Syracuse, and AJ Beers (17th, 1:26:14) of Manlius all earned top-20 finishes. Josh Koeppe of Bridgeport rounded out the Niagara contingent with a 40th-place finish in 1:44:24.
