Whelan, Hockenbury, Williams Set to Compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon in Florida

The 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon will be held this Saturday (3-Feb) in Orlando, Florida.

Three (3) members of USATF Niagara are entered in the event that will begin at 10:10 AM ET. The event will be broadcast live on Peacock TV beginning at 10 AM ET.  A total of 215 men and 165 women are entered.

The three Niagara athletes who are expected to take the starting line are Joseph Whelan, 33, of Webster, Dominic Hockenbury, 26, of Syracuse, and Henry Williams, 25, Ithaca, NY.  Whelan and Williams both compete for Bergen Elite.

Whelan, a 2012 graduate of Syracuse University, qualified for the 2020 trials but was not able to start due to injury. For this year's trials, he ran under the 2:18 qualifying standard on three different occasions in 2023; with his best time of 2:14:41 coming at the Philadelphia Marathon in November. Just two weeks earlier he ran 2:17:32 at the New York Marathon. He holds a career best time of 2:13:39 run at the 2019 Grandma's Marathon.

Hockenbury, a 2021 graduate of Syracuse University, will only be running his second career marathon on Saturday. He qualifed for the trials running 2:17:12 at the McKirdy Micro Marathon in October.

Only 25 years old, Williams is one of the youngest qualifers for the trials. Like Hockenbury he qualified for the trials at the McKirdy Micro Marathon in October running 2:17:51. Williams, who hales from Bartlesville, OK, is a 2021 graduate of Tulsa University and is currently pursuing a Mechanical Engineering PhD degree at Cornell University.
